Shafer Park offers a wide variety of activities of town entertainment events throughout the year.
The 2nd Saturday in May brings people to Shafer Park for this annual swap and recycle event. Anything from clothes and corks to unwanted electronics and plants can be brought, traded, collected or recycled during the event.
Our park serves as the terminus for the James Shaull Wagon Train and National Road Festival during the third Sunday of May, where the three day journey comes to an end, people can meet the drivers and horses, and then see the historic vehicles loaded up to return home.
During the last week of May, the area of the park nearest the museums is filled with family friendly rides and games, food vendor stalls, and the sounds of free, live musical performances. Parking is found on the far end of the park and behind Alex gas station near the museums. Rides start at 5pm each evening.
Every year on the evening of July 3rd, the town gathers for a celebration of our nation’s independence. Local organizations offer refreshments and activities. At dark, the town sets off a spectacular fireworks show visible from the museum property.
National Night Out
An event on the first Tuesday of August, hosted by the Boonsboro Police Department, this event promotes community awareness and public safety, with many fun activities and demonstrations. If its warm enough, families should come prepared with towels so that their kids to have an opportunity to run under the hook & ladder truck fire hose!
During the Sunday afternoon before Labor Day, Shafer park is lined with a couple dozen food trucks of all types and sizes. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy a popular favorite or find new favorites all in the same place. Attendance is free, trucks charge their regular rates for food.
The biggest event in town for now over 50 years has always been during the weekend after Labor Day, when the park fills with over 150 exhibitors. The event is filled with juried art and craft items for sale, demonstrations and history exhibits, and educational activities. Attending is free.
