As mentioned in the orientation, greeters are usually the first face our guests see at our museums.
Being a greeter serves the administrative end of our museum operation – the record keeping and general help desk without needing to learn all of the history in the exhibits.
As a greeter, you will…
In between guests, there is some busy work that can be done from time to time, however you are welcome to enjoy a hobby or a book. Just be sure that our guests have your full attention from the moment they enter to the moment they leave.
Being a greeter isn’t difficult, nor does it require a lot of learning, however it is a very important role and accuracy is key.
We use the guest counts and sales records you keep during your shift to keep track of our museum’s activity. It is very important to ensure that every visitor is counted! Those records help us to plan future programs and can be used to help benefit the museum in grant and sponsorship applications.
When guests enter, be sure to make them feel welcome with a smile and a greeting.
“Hello! Welcome to the National Road Museum! Have you come to tour our museums?” is a great way to both welcome them and begin your interaction with them. The full suggested interaction will be covered later in this course.
When the guest is leaving, be sure to thank them for visiting. If they toured the museums, be sure to point out our comment card and invite them to leave suggestions or comments to help us improve our tour.
Remember that visitors who feel like their visit was worth their while and their experience was spectacular will be more likely to support us or tell their friends about us in the future.
