The intriguing story of America’s first federally funded highway will be presented through such themes as, Road Origins, Vehicles Through Time, Engineering Marvels and Trade & Commerce using photographic murals, maps, artifacts, historic images, artwork, tactile objects, outdoor paving models and compelling video.
Located on the Historic National Road Scenic Byway in Boonsboro, Maryland the museum is conveniently located to other major tourist destinations within the region.
With its 19th century row of preserved Main Street structures, Boonsboro is home to Nora Roberts’ “Inn Boonsboro,” Turn the Page Bookstore and various other quaint shops and restaurants. Shafer Park just behind the museums offers picnic and play areas for guests and hosts many quality events. Two additional community museums are also within walking distance from the National Road and Trolley Station.
A part of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, the museum is just minutes from the South Mountain Battlefield and Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg.
Advances in transportation happened in this region bringing roads, rails, canals and even aviation to fruition.
