CASSELMAN RIVER BRIDGE 200TH BIRTHDAY

Planning has begun for a weekend celebrating the 200^th birthday of the Casselman River Bridge in Grantsville, MD.  Located along the original route of the National Road, the Casselman Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a technological wonder of its time; it was the largest single-span bridge in America with its great stone arch.  The arch spans nearly 354 feet across the Casselman River with stones laid in a random-coursed ashlar pattern. The area surrounding the bridge has been designated as Casselman River State Park with picnic tables and planned trails in the areas adjacent to the bridge.

Currently undergoing repairs, the bridge will be reopen for foot traffic and the dedication of new interpretive panels and completion of walking trails will be completed in time for the September 20-22 event. The celebration will include various speakers and guest appearances, musical performances, historical displays and re-enactors, wagon rides, children activities, food, souvenirs and much, much more.  Come help us celebrate this amazing national treasure!
