Our museums are a smoke-free facility.
Smoking, e-cigarettes and vaping are not permitted on museum grounds.
Only trained and licensed service animals are permitted.
All other animals and petswill not be allowed to enter the museums.

The National Road Museum and Boonsboro Trolley Station offer two museum experiences at one location! Start your visit at the National Road Museum to learn about the nation’s first federally funded highway, and then take a tour of the last surviving trolley station in Washington County.
In addition to our museums, the Boonsboro area offers so many other things to see and do while you are here!
The Boonsboro Visitor Center in our lobby is open whenever the National Road Museum is open, and can provide you with information about local attractions, dining, shopping and more!
Where To Find Us
Our museums are located at 214 North Main Street, on the north edge of Historic Downtown Boonsboro! Conveniently located along the Historic National Road, Alternate Route 40 between Hagerstown and Frederick.
Directions - Select a route:
- Take exit 35 for MD 66, Boonsboro/Smithsburg.
- Turn south toward Boonsboro.
- Continue on MD 66 Mapleville Road for 5 miles.
- Turn Left onto Alternate Route 40.
- Travel on Alt Route 40 for less than a quarter mile.
- Our Museums will be on your right.
- Travel west on W. Patrick Street / Baltimore National Pike / Route 40
- Turn Left onto Old National Pike / Alternate Route 40.
(Those unfamiliar with the area can miss this exit. The next light at Old Camp Road also provides access to the Old National Pike.)
- Continue on Old National Pike / Alternate Route 40 for 12.5 miles.
- Our museums will be on your left after you pass through downtown Boonsboro.
On this route you will pass scenic farmland and cross two mountain ranges almost entirely on the original route of the Historic National Road. Along this trip you will also pass through Historic Braddock Heights, Middletown, and Downtown Boonsboro as well as the South Mountain Battlefield, and will be able to see most of the original National Road milemarkers.
- Take Frederick Road / Alternate Route 40 south toward Funkstown.
- Continue on Frederick Street / Alternate Route 40 at the traffic circle.
- Cross Antietam Creek and continue 500 feet to the traffic light.
- At the light, turn left onto W. Baltimore Street / Alternate Route 40.
- At the next light continue straight on W. Baltimore Street.
- At the following light, turn right onto Frederick Road / Alternate Route 40.
- Continue on Alternate Route 40 / Old National Pike for 7.5 miles.
- Our museums will be on your right as you enter downtown Boonsboro.
Parking
Limited street parking is available immediately in front of the museums
Guests may park at the Shafer Park Lot behind our museums.
(Accessed from Alternate Route 40 / Main Street by turning onto Shafer Park Drive just beside the Trolley Station Museum, or from Potomac Street by turning onto Park Lane beside Potomac Street Creamery.)
