March 29th – Start of the Road Day Celebration

Come celebrate 219 years of the Historic National Road at the National Road Museum in Boonsboro, Maryland!

 

Enjoy the exhibits in Washington County’s newest museum, historic bicycle demonstrations, the Sweet Grub Machine food truck, and an exhibit scavenger hunt for kids!   History discussions with two different National Road historians will take place at 11am and 1pm.  A showcase of some other area museums and historical organizations will also be presented ahead of spring museum season.

 

The National Road was the first federally funded roads project in the United States, approved by Congress on March 29, 1806.  Today it is recognized as a national engineering landmark, National Byway, All-American Road, and Maryland Scenic Byway.

Schedule:

10 AM – 3 PM – Historical organization and historic bicycles displays

10 AM – 2 PM – Sweet Grub Machine Food Truck

11 AM – Bob Savitt, author of “The National Road In Maryland,” will present an informal multimedia history of the National Road and its historic scenes in the museum theater.

12 PM – Vintage bicycle demonstrations behind the museum presented by The Potomac Wheelmen

1 PM – National Road researcher Tom Ruhf will hold a casual discussion in the museum theater with interesting stories and anecdotes from the Road’s history.  Attendee questions are encouraged.
