While the museum does have fire extinguishers, these should only be used for very small fires which may arise, and only if the fire can be put out in 30 seconds or less. Do not risk your safety or others by lingering.
There are four exits from the National Road Museum: The front door, a fire exit beside the Civil War exhibit, another beside the Landmarks exhibit, and a third fire exit at the end of the restroom corridor.
When upstairs, a single-event fire escape rope ladder is present beside the back windows. If using that ladder be sure it holds the window frame securely before use.
The trolley station has one main door in the waiting room. The sliding freight door on the side of the building is held by two latches and the chain across the doorway during normal open days can be removed from a simple hook on either side of the door.
